Adult Counseling

In individual counseling, the client and counselor work together to clarify the client’s concerns and develop a plan to deal with the issues constructively.

There are times when one can benefit from the guidance and perspective individual counseling provides. It can be helpful in addressing a variety of challenging life circumstances. Specifically, counseling may help one:

  • Mitigate the impact of trauma experienced in childhood and throughout life

  • Deal with emotional difficulties such as depression or anxiety

  • Manage the stresses associated with life’s opportunities and challenges

  • Gain skills in navigating life transitions

  • Learn to make peace with hurts of the past

  • Develop healthy patterns for relationships with others

  • Explore life patterns as one seeks to live wholeheartedly

  • Provide a confidential and “safe” place to discuss topics of concern in order to resolve them

  • Learn skills for more effective problem-solving

The specific approach taken in counseling is based on the unique situation of the particular client and seeks to incorporate the client’s personal strengths—emotional, relational, and spiritual—in the healing process.

Also, some of our therapists offer specialized individual counseling services for those who are seeking to recover from traumatic life experiences or who struggle with specific issues such as addiction, sexual addiction, or eating disorders.

Specialty Areas

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) focuses on helping people accept the reality of their lives and their behaviors, as well as, helping them learn to change their lives, including their unhelpful behaviors. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is especially effective for people who have difficulty managing their emotions. DBT has proven to be effective for treating and managing a wide range of mental health conditions. This skills-based approach has 4 main areas of focus: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

EMDR may be an appropriate treatment for individuals who have experienced childhood physical, sexual, or emotional abuse; childhood neglect and lack of attachment; crime or domestic violence; military combat; sudden death or loss; phobias; depression; anxiety; and low self-esteem.
